The stevedore knot is tied like the figure-eight knot... ... with an additional rotation around one of the loops. A rotation by a quarter of a turn to the left, attach the free ends, and get the above knot.

We obtain a prime knot of the first class among the three knots with 6 crossings in the Rolfsen table.

The stevedore knot is part of the family of knots obtained from two entangled loops the four ends of which are joined together after a certain number of half-twists, in other words, pretzel knots of type P(2,1,1,...,1).

one half-twist: trefoil knot two half-twists:  figure-eight knot 4.1.1
three half-twists: prime knot 5.1.2 four half-twists: stevedore knot 6.1.1
